First day of the Year 2009 and already an entry. Amazing, isn't it ?
But here we go.

During our holiday in the spring of 2008 we also did a hike in and around the village of Kuthai. It promised to be a nice day in the mountains so we take off for the so-called 3-seen Wanderung (three-lakes walk). This walk starts in Kuhtai, a popular ski-resort in the winter. Kuhtai is situated at an altitude of 2020m and is Austria's highest winter sport village.

Good to know:
Distance: 9,5 km
Rate: moderate
Altitude: between 1926 - 2368m
Map (incl. elevation information): Kuthai 3-Seen walk
GPS-track available for download: yes
We park our car nearby a road which leads to the Speicher Finstertal (a reservoir). This road is not open to the public (for cars that is) so the only way to get there is by walking or by taking the chairlift up to the 3-seen hut (if it is in operation).
Of course we go by foot and start off via this road to this reservoir. After a few hundred meters we take track nr. 3 which is more adventurous than just following the road. If you look back you have lovely views over the valley of Kuhtai.

The track is not too bad, but consists out of rocks and stones.

And in our case, of course we still had some snow fields to cross here and there.

And guess who was with us today?
Yes ........ our own Elgar. He, as a moose, was very thrilled to see all that snow. He did not want to miss a thing as you can see. And we can understand that cause these were the views he could see from the backpack.

Finally we arrive at the Speicher Finstertal reservoir, situated at 2350m. Just as we arrive a sunny spell shows us the splendor of this area.
As you can see this reservoir is surrounded by huge mountains, f.i. the Neunerkogel (2640m), Finstertaler Schartenkopf (2855m), Zwoelferkogel (2988m). A very impressive view we have to admit. Take your time here to enjoy this scenery.

After a well-deserved break, we move on towards the first of the three lakes, the so-called Untere Plenderlessee (2311m) and then a few meters up there is the Obere Plenderlessee (2344). That is .... we almost missed it because it was still covered up with ice.

At the 3-seen Hut (Drei Seen Huette) you can drink something, that is if it is open (during our stay it had not opened yet for the summer season). From here take track nr. 5 and soon you will encounter lake nr. 2, the Mittlerer Plenderlessee (2317).

Also here the lake was still covered with ice, as you can see in underneath picture. Amazing colors, that is for sure.
But we have to keep on moving, so slowly we descend towards the last lake.

Finally, lake nr. 3, the Hirschebensee at 2166m, was free of ice. After crossing hundreds of snowfields we are a bit tired but luckily from here the track improves and a rather easy path brings you back to Kuthai.

Hopefully you enjoyed our pictures. It was a very nice walk with lots to see and to discover.
